HOW TO EASILY SEE AMSTERDAM’S SPRING TULIPS: A KEUKENHOF GARDENS GUIDE!

SO, YOU’RE PLANNING TO FINALLY SEE AMSTERDAM’S SPRING TULIPS IN FULL BLOOM? 🤩

You’ve come to the right place! We did exactly that last year, spending an epic 3 days in Amsterdam in the hope of seeing the Netherlands bursting into a full floral technicolour.

For the easiest, up-close tulip experience (with every colour, pattern and honestly the biggest tulips we’ve ever seen imaginable) plus minimal planning and stress, there’s only one place to go:

Keukenhof Tulip Gardens, the world’s most spectacular and largest flower garden. It’s just outside a little town called Lisse, a 30 minute drive from Amsterdam!

Below, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan a smooth, stress-free visit. From the best time to go, how to get there, ticket tips and what to expect. 🌷

Budge up Alice, there’s a NEW wonderland in town! Am I right??

IT’S THE WORLD’S LARGEST FLOWER GARDEN, SHOWCASING ALL THE BEST DUTCH DISPLAYS

Let’s quickly talk about Keukenhof Gardens first and what it actually is. It isn’t just any ordinary park full of nice flowers. It’s so much more than that.

It’s a world-famous spring showcase created in collaboration with the very best Dutch bulb growers (over 100+ of them).

Every single year, around 7 million flower bulbs are planted BY HAND across the gardens, carefully curated into themed displays that blend flowers, landscaping and art across 32 hectares. From being there last year, it’s pretty impressive!!

Once the season ends, all of those bulbs are lifted out again to make way for an entirely new design the following year, making it an ever-changing celebration of Dutch horticulture!

KEUKENHOF GARDENS IS EXCLUSIVELY OPEN FROM MID-MARCH TO MID-MAY

Keukenhof Tulip Gardens are only open for a few short period every year, usually mid-March to mid-May.

That limited opening is exactly what makes a visit feel so special, only getting one chance to see it in full bloom!

The landscaping around Keukenhof Gardens is just beautiful. Puts my garden to shame! 😅 Photo by Jordie.

TIP: DON’T COME TO KEUKENHOF GARDENS TOO EARLY, THE OUTDOOR TULIPS WON’T HAVE FLOWERED

Ask us how we know 🙋🏼‍♀️ We got a littleee ahead of ourselves and booked our Amsterdam trip for literally the first week Keukenhof opened (March 22nd).

Little did we know – until we got there!! – that we’d actually visited much too early to see the outdoor tulips in full bloom.

We could see thousands of them all lined up and ready to go, but sadly, the flower heads were still all closed up! *sob* 😭

IF YOU DO ACCIDENTALLY COME TOO EARLY, THERE ARE STILL TULIPS TO SEE

That said, it wasn’t a total loss. There’s a huge, temperature-controlled pavilion in the centre of Keukenhof Gardens where loads of gorgeous tulips are all fully open and beautifully displayed, which definitely softened the blow!

KEUKENHOF GARDENS TULIPS ARE AT THEIR PEAK MID-APRIL TO EARLY MAY

If you really want to see Keukenhof Gardens at its absolute best, aim to visit mid-April to early May, when the tulips are at their peak as the most beautiful full blooms 🌷

Remember, just because Keukenhof Gardens technically opens to the public in mid-March, doesn’t mean the outdoor tulips will already be out blooming. Trust us, wait until April!!

To see Keukenhof Gardens at their peak, visit mid-April to early May.

EXTRAS AT KEUKENHOF YOU SHOULDN’T MISS!

THE DUTCH WINDMILL
Beyond the tulips, Keukenhof has a few fun extras tucked away. One of our favourites is the traditional Dutch windmill hidden toward the edge of the gardens.

You can climb up (for free) and get sweeping views across the surrounding blooming tulip fields one side, and a nice view across Keukenhof Gardens on the other!

THE LAKE STEPPING STONES
About 5 minutes in from the entrance, you’ll reach a lake with a line of flat stepping stones running across a section of it.

From a distance, it genuinely looks like people are walking on water. It’s a great photo spot, but go early if you want a clear shot, because this place gets busy fast!!

Managed to somehow get a photo of me without anyone else, it was a challenge to say the least!!

BUY YOUR OWN DUTCH TULIP BULBS
Scattered around the gardens are small kiosks selling Dutch tulip bulbs to take home. The bulbs are HUGE, good quality and make a great souvenir if you want to bring a little Keukenhof magic back home to your garden! 🌷

GETTING TO KEUKENHOF GARDENS IN LISSE

OPTION 1. MAKE A DAY OF IT ON A “COMBO” TOUR (WE PERSONALLY DID THIS ONE)

Maximise your time and experience across the Netherlands with this combo tour, Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans Windmills Day Trip from Amsterdam on Viator that we personally did (toddler in tow!) and really enjoyed! 👇🏼

Fresh Netherlands countryside air, doses of Dutch culture, free cheese tasting, a traditional windmill village and a maze of GIANT rainbow tulips is what you can expect!

Tbh we’re not usually a fan of big bus tours, but this one was too convenient to pass up. The company was extremely organised and the tour ran like a well-oiled machine, comfortably taking you to TWO of The Netherlands’ most iconic spots in one unforgettable day.

We just sat back, relaxed.. well, as much as you can with an energetic toddler 😅.. and enjoyed all the Dutch goodness the day had to offer.

We’re not usually fans of “big bus” tours, but this one was super comfy, modern and delightfully colourful, taking us from Amsterdam straight to Keukenhof. Photo by Jordie.

THE “COMBO” TOUR ITINERARY RUN THROUGH

Let’s quickly run through this Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans Windmills Day Trip from Amsterdam tour and what we did / exactly what you can expect from it.

Of course, the first stop was Keukenhof Gardens. You had a good 3ish hours there which felt like more than enough. This is great as you get to Keukenhof Gardens early too, so you certainly start off with less crowds.

Well, Keukenhof certainly puts my garden to shame! 😆 Photo by Jordie.

EXTRA STOP 2: CHEESE TASTING & CLOG MAKING
A quick detour to a cheese and clog making farm. Try LOTS of free cheese samples (from Edam, pesto and stinging nettle!) and enjoy a short workshop on how clogs are made.

STOP 3: ZAANSE SCHANS WINDMILL VILLAGE
Next up is Zaanse Schans. Once an industrial working neighbourhood, this postcard-perfect village produced oils, paints, woods and spices in the 18th / 19th centuries.

It’s an “open-air” museum of sorts, keeping its traditionally charming look and feel as you walk round. It’s like being teleported back to 1700’s Netherlands. Think traditional windmills, babbling canals and idyllic countryside.

Walking through Zaanse Schans, with multiple green windmills in the forefront, winding pathways lining them and surrounded by flat but beautiful green Dutch countryside.
Walking through Zaanse Schans. I really loved how the Dutch countryside here had small canals weaving all through it. That’s why it’s full of birdlife, like geese and herons! Photo by Jordie.

You’re free to explore the village at your own pace, but if you’re curious to see how the windmills actually work, you can pop inside a few of them for a small fee. There is one windmill that is free to enter, your guide will point it out.

OPTION 2. DO A “KEUKENHOF ONLY” TOUR

Not fussed about Zaanse Windmills / free cheese samples and just want to see Amsterdam’s spring tulips? No worries!

You could just join a super convenient “Keukenhof only” tour, like this Amsterdam: Keukenhof Entry & Shuttle Bus with Flexible Return tour on Viator.

With transport to/from Amsterdam and entry tickets included, you won’t have to lift a finger and can just enjoy your day.

There’s shuttle buses leaving every 30 minutes back to Amsterdam, so you can stay as long as you like. Plus a chance to upgrade and add a canal cruise should you fancy!

While we personally didn’t do this tour, it looks like a brilliant no fuss option from the recent glowing reviews.

OPTION 3. MAKE YOUR OWN WAY THERE

Of course, if you are confident to drive on your Amsterdam trip, or have a rental car, you can always drive yourself there!

There is a large parking lot at Keukenhof Gardens, but make sure you pre-book your entry ticket AND parking online as early as you can to make your day seamless.

They sell out quickly, especially during Keukenhof’s “peak time” of mid-April to early May, when it’s at its busiest.

CONCLUSION: THE EASIEST WAY TO SEE AMSTERDAM’S MOST BEAUTIFUL SPRING TULIPS

So if you’re after the easiest, most spectacular way to see Amsterdam’s Spring tulips in full bloom just a stone’s throw from the city, Keukenhof Gardens is your best bet!

Manicured gardens bursting with colour, and honestly the biggest and most beautiful tulips we’ve ever seen!!

Remember, for the very best experience, aim to visit mid-April to early May when the outdoor tulips are actually flowered and at their absolute peak.

Getting there is simple too: you can self-drive or book a guided tour.

Again, we personally loved this Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans Windmills Day Trip from Amsterdam combo tour, which turns the whole thing into a relaxed, full-day experience seeing two epic sights of the Netherlands.

If you’d rather just focus on maximising your time in the Keukenhof Gardens and keep logistics effortless, this Amsterdam: Keukenhof Entry & Shuttle Bus with Flexible Return is also a great shout.

We hope you found this blog helpful, and have the most magical time in Amsterdam this Spring!! ✨🌷🌷🌷
