Yes, you could easily see Korouoma Canyon’s frozen waterfalls without doing this tour. No tickets are needed to enter Korouoma Canyon. It’s free, so is the car park. Even the alfresco BBQ stations dotted around the forest can be used by anyone.
Here’s the thing – you’d need to drive yourself 1.5 hours and back to Posio Forest, there’s not really any public transport available.
This is the route you’d take, to be honest I remember thinking that the roads weren’t half as bad as what I’d imagined before we arrived.
What I thought would be ice-rink like roads were well maintained and kept relatively clear in reality. That being said, we visited late November, so there wasn’t too much snow on the ground.

Not everyone wants the hassle of driving themselves 1.5 hours in the wilderness in another country, potentially on your “wrong” side of the road. Bare in mind also, there’s a cost to hiring a car, not to mention petrol there and back.
With this tour, you sit back, relax and leave it up to your experienced guide to do the driving.
2. There’s no way you can get lost on the trail.
On the tour, your experienced outdoor guide is with your group every step of the way, navigating you through the forest along the correct walking trail to Korouoma Canyon. I just remember thinking everything looked the same blanketed in white snow, so we were grateful our guides were there to show us the way.
There’s not many people there either. Well it was super quiet when we went, so it’s not as if you’d be able to ask many people for directions.
3. You’re in safe hands if you fall over.
This didn’t even cross our minds before the tour, but my god, some parts along the Korouoma Canyon are very slippery with frozen ice. Every single person in our group slipped over at least once. One girl in our group was like Bambi on ice – slipping over 4/5 times!
The guides were always there to help us back up and make sure everyone was OK. I don’t even want to imagine really hurting myself and being on my own on the trail.
4. All necessary winter clothing & equipment is provided.
Hiking on an uneven snow-covered terrain unprepared is never a good idea. Rest assured the tour operator makes sure you’re suited, booted and given all the best safety gear (i.e. crampons, snowshoes) to keep you safe.
