We recently returned from an unforgettable (and freezing!) trip to Tromsø – Northern Norway’s colourful Arctic gem. If you’re dreaming of travelling to a Winter Wonderland – complete with snow-dusted peaks, shimmering northern lights and wild reindeer encounters – this is your sign to go!

And we’re here to help!! We’ve taken all the guesswork out of it. This 4 day Tromsø itinerary below includes the best tours, places to stay, local sights and our recent “on the ground” top tips to make the most of your visit.

4 DAYS IN TROMSØ TRAVEL ITINERARY:

DAY 1: ARRIVE, EXPLORING TROMSO CITY & HARBOUR AND FJELLHEISEN CABLE CAR

ARRIVING INTO TROMSØ
Fly into Tromsø Airport (TOS), and grab a convenient taxi ride straight from the terminal. Most rides take under 10 minutes and cost about £15 GBP / $20 USD to the centre or Tromsdalen area.

WHERE TO STAY (OUR TOP SUGGESTION)
We stayed at Tromsø City Apartments in the peaceful Tromsdalen district and loved it. Think chic Scandinavian interiors, lovely river / city views towards Tromsø city (especially from the upper floor apartment) and a quieter location just 15/20 walk across the bridge from Tromsø city.

Tromso City Apartments, located in Tromsdalen, is one of the best places to stay in Tromso! — There’s two apartments, a ground and upper floor. Request upper floor, it has better views of Tromsø across the river!

It’s close (and walkable to) Tromsø but ideally set away from its bright city lights. This massively improves visibility if the northern lights do decide to appear!

Now, obviously I can’t guarantee northern lights for you (I wish I could!!) but we were very lucky to see THIS display directly above Tromso City Apartments on our last night! 🤩

WALK ACROSS THE BRIDGE INTO TROMSO
Now is an ideal time to get your bearings of the area! First up, walk from Tromsdalen to Tromsø centre via the main bridge. Before crossing, pop into the striking Arctic Cathedral (free), a modern and iconically geometric church.

WANDER THE HARBOUR FRONT
Once you reach the city, stroll along Tromsø’s harbour. It’s a buzzing mix of fishing boats, colourful cafés and scenic views that change with the light.

At the harbours end, you’ll find –

A glass building housing the MS Polstjerna, an old seal-hunting ship steeped in history.

Polaria Aquarium, the world’s northernmost aquarium with a very unique design, inspired by “ice floes”!
Directly opposite is the tiny Motorcycle Club with bright colourful street art, making for a fun photo op!

While you’re at it, swing by the Perspektivet Museum (free entry) to see how Tromsø transformed from a small fishing village in 1800s to the Arctic’s thriving capital today. It’s pretty small, you won’t need more than an hour or so.

FJELLHEISEN CABLE CAR / OBSERVATION DECK

Wrap up your day by heading back to Tromsdalen to catch the Fjellheisen cable car. It’s about a 15 minute walk from Tromsø City Apartments.

At the top, there’s an observation deck giving you sweeping vistas over Tromsø and the surrounding mountains. The view literally took my breath away, it’s just beautiful!!

Time your visit just before sunset to watch the day fade into dazzling city lights all in one go! Pre-book your visit direct here to avoid any queues.

Luckily, there’s a large cafe with panoramic windows up here too to escape the cold, while still enjoying the views. Win win! It serves food, plus hot / cold drinks and is open 9am-11.30pm everyday. We had a delicious hot chocolate!!

DAY 2: FEED WILD REINDEER, LEARN ABOUT SAMI CULTURE & CHASE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

REINDEER FEEDING & SAMI CULTURE (HALF DAY TOUR)
From November to April, one of the most highly rated experiences near Tromsø – and the highlight of our trip!! – is this Reindeer visit and Sami culture tour.

Shake a bucket of feed and watch over 200 reindeer eagerly trot toward you. Some eat delicately from your hand, others dive head first 🤣

An absolute must do on your Tromso itinerary in Winter (and one of the best tours in Tromso) is a sami wild reindeer feeding experience! — Jordie feeding a wild reindeer their breakfast, one of our favourite things we did in Tromsø!!

After the feeding, visitors gather inside a traditional Sámi lavvu tent, where you can sit around a warm fire and hear stories and joik songs shared by Sámi hosts. It’s a beautiful way to learn about Norway’s Indigenous culture and their deep connection with the land.

Fun fact: The herds are brought down from the mountains during winter for their safety. In the warmer months, they roam wild and free.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE (EVENING TOUR)
Let’s be honest, the northern lights are probably one of the biggest reasons you’re here. Tromsø is one of the best places on Earth to spot them, but your best chance is to leave the city lights behind.

With our tour we actually had low solar activity predicted for that evening, but our guides were relentless! Deep in the Fjordlands we travelled and ended up seeing the most breathtaking Northern Lights we’ve still EVER seen, including vibrant greens, purples, pink and white colours!

DAY 3: WHALE WATCHING IN THE ARCTIC

WHALE WATCHING FULL DAY TRIP
If you’re visiting between November and February, a full-day whale watching tour is one of the most exciting ways to explore the wild beauty beyond Tromsø.

This 5* Whale Watching RIB Experience is one of the top-rated options out there. Guests travel by high-speed RIB boat to the Skjervøy region for sightings of humpback whales, orcas and even elusive fin whales up close while still remaining ethical and respectful.

DAY 4: VISIT AN ICE HOTEL, AN ARCTIC SUNSET & TROMSO’S OLDEST PUB

EXPLORE THE TROMSØ ICE DOMES (HALF DAY TOUR)
Take a guided day tour to the masterfully sculpted Tromsø Ice Domes – a series of suites, restaurant, cinema room and bar carved completely out of ice every year! Open mid-December to early April, you’ve got to see it to believe it!

GETTING TO TROMSO ICE DOMES

This “Tromsø Ice Domes Snow Park & Wilderness Experience (incl. transfers)” is the link to their official guided tour, the most hassle-free option too as there’s no public transport to get there.

This all-inclusive day tour includes entry to Tromsø Ice Domes, plus exciting activities like Tandem Skiiing, Campfire Crafting and getting up close and personal with reindeer and huskies! The guided tour includes a meal too.

Opening times: 11:00am – 18:00pm
Entrance ticket price: Adult 795 NOK, Child (2-11) 397 NOK – ticket info applicable for those visiting independently (i.e. if you’re driving your own car). The guided tour covers this cost.

SUNSET AT TELEGRAFBUKTA BEACH
Make your last evening in Tromsø extra special watching the sunset at Telegrafbukta, a peaceful snow-blanketed beach on Tromsø’s western edge. (public space, free to do)

With unobstructed views over the fjord and barely any light pollution, it’s one of the best spots in town for golden hour – and if the conditions are right, the northern lights!

On the way back, cosy up in Ølhallen, Tromsø’s oldest pub with 72 taps of Norwegian beer. I’m no beer drinker, so I tried their cider instead, which was delicious!

The best free thing to do on your Tromso Itinerary is to watch a sunset at Telegrafbukta beach in Tromso. Top tip: Telegrafbukta beach is a 30 minute walk one-way or you can catch local buses #33 or #34 bus from the city centre.

KEY THINGS TO PACK FOR TROMSO

CLOTHING LAYERS

– Under-top vests
– Long-sleeved thermal tops (we love the Heattech range from Uniqlo)
– Thick thermal jumper or sweater (merino wool or something fleece-like is ideal)
– A big puffer coat. Ideally waterproof for snow with a hood.
– Thermal leggings (double up with two pairs on night tours).

CLOTHING ACCESSORIES

– Bobble hat
– Ear muffs.
– Thick scarf or snood.
– Thick gloves (something like this – waterproof, coldproof And enables touchscreen)
– Thermal socks (bring a few pairs!)
– Walking boots with very good grip.
– Removable cramp-ons. In January when we visited, Tromsø centre was (in parts) like an ice rink! Where snow had fallen, and frozen over.I slipped so many times and I wished I had bought cramp-ons. Easily removable and peace of mind.
