LET’S START WITH HOTELS WITH EASY ACCESS TO TROMSØ
While Tromsø city centre is super convenient for restaurants, attractions and tour pick-ups, its bright lights aren’t ideal for Aurora spotting!
Stay slightly outside the city instead, and you’ll find darker skies and much better opportunities to see the Northern Lights, while still being within easy reach of everything!
Two great areas for this are Tromsdalen, just across the Tromsø Bridge, and Kvaløya, the large island west of the city. Both offer more peaceful surroundings and noticeably darker skies, while keeping Tromsø’s centre easily accessible.
1. TROMSO CITY APARTMENTS (WHERE WE STAYED!)

Location-wise, you’re just a 5 minute walk from the iconic Arctic Cathedral and around 15 / 20 minutes on foot across the bridge into Tromsø city centre (or a quick bus ride). Perfect for visitors who aren’t planning on renting a car.
Northern lights at Tromsø City Apartments
This is where the location really paid off! Being outside the bright city centre means noticeably less light pollution and much better Aurora visibility.
We got incredibly lucky on our final night and were treated to an EPIC Northern Lights display right above the apartment! I literally grabbed my GoPro and ran outside in my pyjamas and fluffy socks. Freezing, but 100% worth it.

On the same site as ÆRA Nord’s Panorama Glass Lodge is this relatively NEW little gem – their canvas “Aurora Igloo”.
A 23ft² double-insulated canvas igloo with a comfortable double bed, heating, a partially-transparent ceiling for sky views and an internal log burner.
Bathrooms, showers and a shared kitchen are located separately in a nearby communal building. A great budget-friendly option to still enjoy this incredible Arctic location!

CONCLUSION: TROMSO NORTHERN LIGHTS HOTELS
While you absolutely can see the Northern Lights from Tromsø city centre, all that light pollution doesn’t exactly give you the clearest view!
For the best of both worlds, I highly recommend staying just outside the city in areas like Tromsdalen or Kvaløya – darker skies, but still easy access to Tromsø city centre.
For an even more immersive, unique stay, venture slightly further out to ÆRA Nord.
