5 DAYS IN SAN FRANCISCO:
THE ULTIMATE ITINERARY

For our 5 days in San Francisco itinerary listed below, we begin exploring the beautiful Bay area and Marina District, including The Palace of Fine Arts, Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf. We also go inner city to Union Square before escaping the city in the idyllic Golden Gate Park and Lands End trail.

DAY 1: GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, BATTERY SPENCER LOOKOUT, PALACE OF FINE ARTS & WAVE ORGAN

MORNING: THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
First port of call this morning has to be the infamous Golden Gate Bridge. Pass the Welcome Centre courtyard to learn its intriguing history and facts before crossing this rich red icon!

You can either rent your own bike, join a guided bike tour or walk yourself across to the other side in just 30 minutes! We’d suggest walking to stop and enjoy views at your own leisure.

Pictured: The approach to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Luckily Karl the Fog wasn't too bad that day and some blue skies were visible! Photograph taken by Jordie during our 5 days in San Francisco trip.

Top Tip: Get in lane! The left of the bridge is cyclists only, the right is for pedestrians. You’ll be sternly addressed by a speaker phone if you use the wrong one! The heavy traffic makes it a nightmare to to re-cross.

Fun Fact: The bridges colour was chosen to maximise visibility in extreme fog. The fog is so common (100+ days a year), it has inherited a nickname – Karl. You are lucky if you catch it on a clear day!

Fun Fact: The official colour of the Golden Gate Bridge is actually ‘International Orange’, not red!

Learnt Fact: There are numerous emergency ‘Samaritan’ helpline phones along the bridge for people feeling vulnerable or suicidal.

BATTERY SPENCER LOOKOUT
At the other end, walk that extra mile up to Battery Spencer Lookout for insane views of the bridge and San Francisco’s skyline! If you’re walking, you’ll need to cross beneath the bridge underpass first. Cyclists are already on the correct side.

Pictured: Jordie with the epic view you can expect at Battery Spencer Lookout! On a clear day, you can see the full length of the Golden Gate Bridge plus San Francisco city in the distance! Photograph taken by Liam.

Top Tip: Across the bridge, H Dana Bower Rest Area provides a car park and public toilets, but no shops. Bring all food & drink you need before you cross the bridge!

Top Tip: Try to go on a relatively clear day for the best chance of spectacular views (minus ‘Karl the Fog’) if possible.

AFTERNOON: THE PALACE OF FINE ARTS
Cross back over the bridge to the monumental Palace of Fine Arts, a grand exhibition venue displaying artwork from all around the world since 1915. See scheduled art exhibitions.

Outside, enjoy the pristine green areas and lakes filled with swans, geese, ducks and terrapins!

EVENING: WAVE ORGAN & CRISSY FIELD BEACH SUNSET
A 3-minute walk away is Crissy Field East Beach and marina. Join friendly locals and dog walkers for a sun set against the distant Golden Gate bridge.

Here you’ll also find β€˜The Wave Organ’, an interactive acoustic sculpture from 1986. Place your ear to the different pipes to hear musical notes, activated by movement from the oceans waves!

Spotted on grassy verge just before Crissy Field Beach. Otherwise known as a “Beechey Ground Squirrel”. They reside in complex underground burrow systems, with each squirrel using their own entrance! Their diet consists of insects, seeds, fruit and nuts – using their cheeks to store any extra! Lifespan is typically up to 6 years.

DAY 2: LOMBARD STREET, MACONDRAY LANE, UNION SQUARE, FISHERMAN’S WHARF & PIER 39

MORNING: LOMBARD STREET
Make your way to Hyde Street junction to start at the top of the β€˜crookedest road in the world’, Lombard Street. This short section of road has 8 hairpin turns to help cars travel safely down an otherwise un-drivable incline! Use the stepped path ways either side to walk along the road safely.

Join a fun GoCar San Francisco driving tour to drive down this street yourself!

PASS THROUGH MACONDRAY LANE
On route to walking towards Union Square, pass through Macondray Lane. Start at the Jones Street entrance to stroll the short crooked cobbles of the ‘Buddha Park’, a real fairytale garden with wild flowers, calming water fountains and moss covered Buddha statues.

When walking from Lombard Street towards Union Square, you must add passing through the hidden gem of Macondray Lane on your 5 days in San Francisco itinerary!

Emerge at the other end near Taylor Street, be rewarded with insane panoramic harbour views!

Top Tip: The start of Macondray Lane is half way up one of San Francisco’s steep hills – get ready to give your glutes a workout!

AFTERNOON: SHOP AT UNION SQUARE
From Macondray Lane, walk another the 25 minutes to your next destination, Union Square. On route, stop off at the free San Francisco Cable Car museum as you pass through Chinatown. if you fancied a refreshment, pop into the quirky tiki-themed Tonga Room & Hurricane bar.

Spend the afternoon at Union Square either browsing pop-up markets on the main square, or department stores such as Saks, Macy’s or Westfield.

RIDE THE SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CAR
Jump on the infamous San Francisco cable car at Union Square’s Powell / Market Street β€œCable Car Turnaround Point”. Whether you sit on the wooden benches or do the classic ‘hanging off the sides’, stay on the cable car until you reach the terminating stop, Fisherman’s Wharf! A single one-way ticket is $8 USD.

Pictured: The San Franscisco cable car, an absolute must do on your 5 days in San Francisco itinerary. Photograph taken by Jordie.

Top Tip: Hold onto your phone or cameras very tightly if you decide to hang off the side of the cable car! Jordie almost dropped her phone quite a few times!

Top Tip: There are ‘on-route’ stops, but we advise to always board the cable car at Union Square, the very first stop. The cable car is always incredibly full and not a lot of people tend to get off until the end. If this is the case, the cable car will not stop on-route if there is no more room for additional passengers.

Top Tip: At the weekends, expect to wait at least 1 hour for a cable car ride from the Union Square stop. For a much quieter experience, the best time to plan a cable car ride is during a weekday. The queues are 1/3 of the size with only a 10-15 minute wait.

Afterwards, head over to the bustling Pier 39, a two-storey pier full of craft gift and art shops, fair rides, impromptu performances and bustling music.

Make a few UBER stops at two sets of famous San Francisco houses. Firstly, the real house used in the movie Mrs Doubtfire, featuring the late Robin Williams. Located on 2640 Steiner Street, we loved the fact the house looks exactly the same, except for little paint job and an added white fence!

The second spot to visit is the iconic row of houses known as the β€˜Painted Ladies’, that are featured in every San Francisco based film imaginable!

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN FRANCISCO

When choosing where to stay in San Francisco for the first time, we believe the best area to stay are either around the Marina District (near the Bay area and Golden Gate Bridge) or around Fisherman’s Wharf.

We’ve gathered a few of our top picks in both destinations, listed below:

GETTING AROUND SAN FRANCISCO

75%

If you stay near Marina Bay, most key attractions are within walking distance. Huge tip, walking East to West in San Francisco is relatively flat, walking North to South in San Francisco is up & down huge hills!

20%

We mainly used Uber to avoid San Francisco hills, but super handy to have installed / set up on your phone beforehand. Internet required.
Tip: You tip and rate the driver via the App after the drop off has completed!

5%

Ride the infamous San Francisco cable car for just $8 single ticket! Check out the official website for information on payment methods.

CAN YOU GET AROUND SAN FRANCISCO WITHOUT A CAR? πŸš™

We don’t believe that a car is necessary to just get around San Francisco city. From personal experience, the most seamless way to get around San Francisco is by using UBER to get to basically anywhere.

There is an abundance of UBER drivers in San Francisco and you won’t be waiting long getting from one place to the next!

If you are extending your stay or simply want to explore more of the Californian coast outside of San Francisco, your best and most convenient option is to rent a car! You could even make it a road trip to Los Angeles!

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO:
“KNOW BEFORE YOU GO” FAQ’S

WHY SHOULD I VISIT SAN FRANCISCO? WHAT MAKES SAN FRANCISCO SPECIAL?

San Francisco is the United States’ quirkiest and most eccentric city. Bursting with colour, character and charisma: San Francisco is absolutely worth a visit.

Set along the California Bay, San Francisco has everything from iconic landmarks, modern arts, intriguing architecture, coastal walks, great shopping, wild sea-lions, bustling fisherman piers, idyllic beaches and much more!

WHAT SHOULD I SEE FOR A FIRST TIME IN SAN FRANCISCO?

Our 5 days in San Francisco itinerary captures every major sight that everyone visiting San Francisco for the first time should see.

It includes the classic hotspots such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Pier 39, but also hidden inner city gems, city parks, an epic coastal walking trail and the best beaches to visit. Read below to find out more:

WHAT ARE THE BEST MONTHS TO VISIT SAN FRANCISCO?

What we found super interesting was that the water surrounding San Francisco actually regulates its Mediterranean climate all year round, meaning that the temperature itself does not change that drastically between its seasons.

San Francisco does however have TWO definitive weather seasons to be aware of: A Wet and Dry season.

β˜”οΈŽοΈŽ WET SEASON
(November to March)

During these months, December to February in particular, San Francisco stays relatively mild with a 14-16Β°c (57-60Β°F) average, but chilly winds and rain can make it feel much colder! The coldest month of January is the cheapest month to visit San Francisco.

🌞 DRY SEASON
(April to October)

The San Francisco dry season provides a much needed relief from the rain, typically bringing in dry weather with very little precipitation. June to August averages between 15-22Β°c (59-71Β°F), plus bring the longest daylight hours at 11 hours a day.

June to August are also the busiest months for tourism. With countless San Francisco events and festivals going on, this causes higher hotel and flight prices during this period.

Surprisingly – it is the latter months of September to October that bring San Francisco’s warmest temperatures, between 18-23Β°c (64-73Β°F)! Temperatures however do start to drop considerably when hitting November.

OUR VERDICT – THE SWEET SPOT

Overall, we believe the best months to visit San Francisco are either May, or between September to October:

May has a comfortably warm max average of 18-21Β°c (around 70Β°F) with little rain, making walking around and visiting outdoor attractions much more comfortable. It’s also out of season, therefore much less crowded by tourists plus cheaper hotels, flights and tours!

In the same way, September and October welcomes the warmest average temperatures 18-23Β°c (64-73Β°F), whilst technically still being a cheaper “off peak” season.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO SEE SAN FRANCISCO?

We believe to get the best out of your San Francisco itinerary, you need at least 5 days: 3 to 4 days in the inner city and 1 to 2 to venture on a day trip to surrounding areas, including Yosemite National Park or a Valley wine tour.

Therefore, for the best itinerary plan, we would say 5 days in San Francisco the perfect and minimum amount of time to visit!

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET TO SAN FRANCISCO?

The best way to get to San Francisco is by flying directly into its main airport, San Francisco International (SFO). From here, you can jump into one of many taxi’s waiting outside or order an Uber to take you into the city. Check Skyscanner for the deals.

The driving distance from San Francisco International airport to the city is approximately 30 minutes (traffic dependant).
