It may be one of Europe’s rainiest cities, but we were lucky with dry weather and honestly, even a bit of rain wouldn’t take away from its charm.

We visited in mid-November, but this itinerary works all year-round. Below you’ll find the best things to do in Bergen, where to eat, where to stay and much more. Let’s go!! 🤩

4 DAYS IN BERGEN NORWAY ITINERARY:

On Day 1, fly into Bergen Flesland Airport (BGO) either the evening before or early that morning.

WHERE TO STAY IN BERGEN
Ideally base yourself near Bryggen / Vågen Harbour. It puts you in easy walking distance from all the main sights, best restaurants and fjord tour departure points, making a big difference when you only have a short time in the city!

DAY 1: BRYGGEN, MUSEUMS & FLØIBANEN FUNICULAR

MORNING
Start at the historic Bryggen District, home to Bergen’s iconic row of colourful buildings along the Vågen harbour.

Each building houses small, charming shops selling unique Norwegian gifts and collectibles. The first red building you’ll spot, Julehuset, is actually a permanent Christmas shop!

Make sure you wander down the delightfully wonky wooden walkways between the buildings. This is where Bryggen really comes to life – with hidden craft stores, artist studios and workshops tucked away.

Many aren’t even listed on Google Maps, so just explore and see what you find. We came across a retro flea market and a lovely pottery studio!

Bryggen is actually quite compact, it’ll take under an hour to explore properly.

💡 You might notice the buildings look slightly wonky. That’s because, even after major fires (including the great fire of 1702), Bryggen was rebuilt on its original 12th-century foundations.

💡 Since 1979, Bryggen has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

EARLY AFTERNOON
Once you’ve explored Bryggen, you can dive a little deeper into its history with one of Bergen’s nearby museums. Here are the main ones to consider:

1. Hanseatic Museum (located here)
Located right by the wharf, this is the most convenient option. It focuses on the Hanseatic merchants from northern Germany who shaped Bergen from the 13th century, living and trading here for over 400 years.

2. Bryggen Museum (located here)
A small but super interesting museum just past Bryggen, opposite the Radisson Blu hotel. It’s set underground and showcases artefacts from Bergen dating back to the 1100s–1600s. We found this one a great way to understand what daily life was like in medieval Norway.

3. Old Bergen Museum (located here)
For something more immersive, this open-air museum lets you walk through a recreated 1800s Bergen with historic wooden buildings and costumed actors.

It’s about a 7-minute bus ride from the centre, but note it’s seasonal (open spring / summer only).

LATE AFTERNOON / EVENING
One of the best things to do in Bergen is take the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen. It takes just 6 minutes from the city centre and is easily one of the most popular attractions in Norway, for good reason!!

The entrance (located here) is just a 5-minute walk from Bryggen, making it super easy to slot into your day.

FLØYEN VIEWPOINT
At the top, you’re immediately greeted by a large open-air viewpoint with incredible views across Bergen city, the surrounding mountains and beyond!

We recommend heading up around an hour before sunset so you can watch the view transform from daylight, to golden hour to – our favourite – the city lights at night:

OTHER THINGS TO DO WHEN UP AT FLØYEN

CAFÉ AND PARK AREA
Just behind the main viewpoint you’ll find a gift shop, café and small park area. The café is especially handy in winter if you need to warm up. The park has benches, a small play area and more scenic viewpoints.

FLØYEN GOATS
Yes, really! Keep an eye out for the famous Fløyen goats, a small herd of friendly cashmere goats that roam the area and love a good photo opportunity.

WALKS FROM FLØYEN
If you fancy stretching your legs, there are a few easy walking routes nearby. A popular option is the 10-minute walk to Lake Skomakerdiket, a peaceful spot just past the main park. We actually spotted the goats grazing here during our visit.

UNIQUE CABINS TO SEE
There are also two unusual cabin structures hidden in the woodland nearby.

The Beehive is a wooden pod suspended in the trees and looks like – you guessed it – a giant beehive!
The Tubakuba cabin is a more modern architectural structure, tucked slightly deeper into the forest.

You can’t go inside as they’re real accommodations, but both are fun to find and worth a quick look. Tubakuba in particular has incredible panoramic views from the front!

Venture into the woods just behind the Mount Fløyen viewpoint to see the Tubakuba structure, a mountain cabin you can rent out and stay in! — The Tubakuba cabin, just a few minute walk away from the Beehive. *Photo by Liam.*

💡 The Fløibanen runs frequently, with a cable car every 10 to 15 minutes. Operating at 7:30am-11pm (weekdays) and 9:30am–11pm (weekends).

💡 You can buy tickets at the entrance, but we still recommend booking online in advance. Tickets are valid all day with no time slot, and you’ll get a QR code to scan at the barriers.

DAY 2: NÆRØYFJORDEN CRUISE, FLÅM & STEGASTEIN VIEWPOINT

FULL DAY TOUR
This 11 hour “Nærøyfjorden to Flåm fjord cruise & Stegastein viewpoint” tour from Bergen is an absolute must. Honestly, if you only do one fjord tour, make it this one. Tour highlights include:

TVINDEFOSSEN WATERFALL
A quick but beautiful stop to see this powerful waterfall. When we visited in November, it was completely frozen which made it even more magical!

NÆRØYFJORDEN CRUISE
The main highlight! You’ll board a modern boat and spend around 2 hours cruising through the fjords, surrounded by towering cliffs and dramatic scenery. Easily some of the most breathtaking landscapes we’ve ever seen.

Keep an eye out for Undredal, a postcard-perfect colourful village, which you’ll pass shortly after departing Gudvangen.

FLÅM VILLAGE
A short stop here to stretch your legs before continuing.

STEGASTEIN VIEWPOINT
The final stop and the icing on the cake: This elevated viewpoint looks out over the fjords from above. The soft purple tones of dusk made it feel even more beautiful.

💡 It’s a long day with a fair bit of driving, but the regular stops (toilets, snacks, viewpoints) made it very manageable.

EVENING
You’ll be dropped back at the original meeting point by the harbour, right near the Fish Market opposite Bryggen.

If you’re hungry, head straight to Fish Me restaurant at the back of the market. We had some of the freshest, most delicious fish and chips here. Highly recommend!!

DAY 3: NORDNES PENINSULA, KODE MUSEUM & FJÅK CHOCOLATE

MORNING
We stayed at Comfort Hotel Bergen, on the Nordnes peninsula just across from Bryggen. One morning, we set off with no real plan and just accidentally wandered into the charming neighbourhood of Nordnes.

It feels much quieter and more local, with rows of charming wooden houses and hardly any crowds. It’s a great spot to see the more authentic, residential side of Bergen.

NORDNES PARK
At the very tip of the peninsula, you’ll find Nordnesparken, a peaceful little park with lovely ocean views.

While Northern Lights sightings in Bergen are rare, this is actually one of the best spots in the city to try, thanks to lower light pollution and its north-facing position.

NORDNES SEAWATER POOL
Right next to the park is a little hidden gem, Nordnes Sjøbad, a waterside seawater pool heated to a lovely 30°c.

There’s also a sauna, plus direct access to swim in the icy fjord year-round (if you’re feeling brave)!

Opening times vary quite a bit and it does close on certain days, so check ahead on Google if you decide to go.

AFTERNOON
From Nordnes, wander 15 to 20 minutes back towards the city centre. It’s a lovely walk, especially along streets like Knøsesmauet and Østre Murallmenningen.

KODE PERMANENTEN MUSEUM
Next, head to the KODE Permanenten Museum to see whatever exhibition is on during your visit.

When we went in November, we caught “Pepperkakebyen” – the world’s largest gingerbread city. It was honestly incredible. And smelt even better 🤤

This is a yearly Bergen tradition where locals and schools create a detailed miniature version of the city entirely from real gingerbread. The level of detail is actually insane:

FJÅK CHOCOLATE SHOP
After basking in that glorious gingerbread, let’s satisfy your sugar cravings! Make a beeline for Fjåk Chocolate Shop.

This cosy little café was our favourite in Bergen. The interiors are beautifully Scandinavian, but it’s the hot chocolate that made us come back twice.

There are loads of flavours to choose from, from the OG classic milk chocolate to salted caramel, dark chocolate with exotic fruit, chilli or nutty notes or even a super creamy white chocolate one. Don’t forget the big marshmallow too!

💡 The street Fjåk sits on, Skostredet, is packed with quirky bars and restaurants. One that really caught our eye was Brasserie Cherie.

DAY 4: MOSTRAUMEN FJORD CRUISE & HEIT SAUNA

HALF-DAY CRUISE
If you’ve got a fourth day in Bergen, this is the perfect chance to squeeze in one more fjord experience.

This time, go for the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, one of the most popular and convenient options from Bergen.

Another very popular and convenient fjord cruise you can do directly from Bergen and add to your Bergen itinerary is the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, taking you into the idyllic Osterfjord and back in just under 4 hours total. — We were very lucky to have great weather during our Mostraumen Fjord Cruise from Bergen. *Photo by Jordie.*

It departs right from the main Vågen wharf (opposite Bryggen) and lasts just under 4 hours, typically running from 10am to around 2-2:30pm.

You’ll cruise to the very end of the Osterfjord, slowing down to weave through the narrow waterway of the Mostraumen strait. In our opinion, this was the most picturesque part of the entire cruise for us!

After that the boat turns back, returning the way it came.

At the very end of the Osterfjord is a wonderful large waterfall, which as you can see, was totally frozen solid when we visited Bergen in November!

AFTERNOON
The perfect way to round off your Bergen itinerary is with one of the city’s most unique experiences, the Heit Sauna.

Set on a floating pier right in the harbour, you can relax in a warm sauna while looking out over the water and city skyline.

You can choose between a shared session or a private booking, but either way, it’s the ideal way to unwind and reflect on an epic few days in Bergen.

If you’re feeling brave, you can cool off in the icy fjord between sauna sessions. Apparently, 99% of HEIT sauna go’ers take the plunge (sorry, dad joke lol) all year-round.

💡 To get to Heit Sauna, hop on the Bergen Light Railway from Byparken to Florida (just 4 stops), then it’s a 5 minute walk to the pier.

BEST PLACES TO EAT IN BERGEN

🍲 The Daily Pot

A small, wholesome soup spot in the centre of Bergen. Everything is made fresh daily, packed with flavour and great value. We went on our first evening when we didn’t want a heavy meal, and it was exactly what we needed.

🐟‘Fish Me’ Restaurant

Tucked at the back of Bergen Fish Market, with cosy covered seating and views over the harbour. We had some of the freshest fish and chips we’ve ever tasted here. If you’re a seafood lover, this is a must, the sushi also looked incredible.

🇮🇹 Olivia’s Italian Restaurant

Just around the corner on the harbour front, Olivia’s is a premium-feel Italian restaurant. Think beautiful interiors, waterfront views and really attentive service. Liam went for a pasta dish, I had a handmade pizza – both 10/10!

BERGEN PACKING LIST

FOR WARMER MONTHS:

Loose comfortable clothing.
Light jacket or fleece.
Swimsuit for the Nordnes Seawater pool / HEIT Sauna.
A microfibre beach towel (fast drying & lightweight) for the Nordnes Seawater pool or HEIT Sauna.
A spare waterproof bag to store your wet towel / swimsuit after the Nordnes Seawater pool or HEIT Sauna.
Comfortable lightweight walking shoes.
Refillable water bottle .
Powered battery pack for your smart phone.

FOR WINTER MONTHS / RAINY WEATHER:

A thick waterproof coat / thick coat with additional rain poncho.
Multiple layers of loose clothing and thermal accessories, including a few thick jumpers and thermal leggings, socks, gloves, bobble hats, snood, scarf (if weather is cold).
An umbrella – this is Bergen (one of Europe’s rainiest cities) after all!
Comfortable lightweight walking boots with good grip underneath in case of snow or ice. Failing that, invest in some good removable snow spikes to add to the bottom of your walking boots.

HOW TO GET AROUND BERGEN CENTRE

IS BERGEN A WALKABLE CITY?

Yes, Bergen is a very walkable city and it is very easy to get to most key sights and attractions on foot.

CAN YOU GET AROUND BERGEN WITHOUT A CAR?

Yes, you can absolutely get around Bergen without a car. Bergen is a very walkable city, though any attractions located slightly further out of the city are covered by either the Bergen Light Rail or public transport, such as their great Skyss public bus system.

TOP TIPS FOR VISITING BERGEN ON A BUDGET

If you are likely to visit a lot of the museum attractions during your Bergen itinerary, plus use the Bergen Light Rail and the Fløibanen Funicular, it may benefit you to invest in the Bergen City Card during your stay in Bergen.

The Bergen City Card gives free entry or discounted admissions across numerous attractions, sightseeing tours and even seasonal events in central Bergen. Check out the Bergen City Card official website here to see the options on offer for you.

SEASONS & WEATHER IN BERGEN

Bergen, Norway, experiences a temperate oceanic climate with distinct seasons, each offering a unique charm to visitors.

Summer, from June to August, is the most popular time to visit, with temperatures ranging from 55°F to 65°F (13°C to 18°C). This season showcases Bergen’s vibrant green landscapes, long days, and a bustling atmosphere.

Autumn, from September to November, brings cooler temperatures between 45°F and 55°F (7°C to 13°C), accompanied by the breathtaking transformation of foliage.

Winter, spanning from December to February, sees temperatures ranging from 32°F to 41°F (0°C to 5°C). While relatively mild, it often brings rain and occasional snow, turning the city into a winter wonderland.

Finally, spring, from March to May, marks the awakening of nature with temperatures between 37°F and 50°F (3°C to 10°C).

CONCLUSION: BERGEN ITINERARY

In conclusion, this 4 days in Bergen itinerary is the perfect blend of everything Bergen has to offer.

From Bryggen’s wonky wooden walkways, the jaw-dropping views atop Mount Fløyen, the sumptuous HEIT sauna on the pier plus the best hot chocolate you will ever taste – Bergen quite literally has it all!

We highly recommend you do make time to sail the fjords of Western Norway from Bergen. If you can only do one tour, we highly suggest Nærøyfjorden to Flåm fjord cruise and Stegastein viewpoint full day tour, as here the fjords are miles larger and more impressive, plus you see so much more during the day.

However, if you are tight for time or would just prefer a shorter trip, Mostraumen Fjord Cruise is a good alternative, though the cruise does feel a lot more long winded.

HOW MANY DAYS ARE ENOUGH IN BERGEN?

The perfect amount of days to spend in Bergen is 4 days. This timeframe allows you to dedicate 1 full day to enjoy the Nærøyfjorden cruise to Flåm and Stegastein viewpoint tour, and allow plenty of time to meander Bergen and its inner city attractions for the other 2 to 3 days.

IS BERGEN NORWAY EXPENSIVE?

Personally, we did not find Bergen as expensive as we thought. The journey from Bergen airport to Bergen city was incredibly cheap at only 40 NOK, approx. £3 GBP / $4 USD.

What was slightly more expensive was the dinners, but it was no more than you would expect from city prices. For example, a meal and non-alcoholic drink can cost up to £30 GBP.

What was expensive of course was the imported alcoholic drinks, however as I was 30 weeks pregnant at the time and Liam is not a big drinker – we didn’t feel the pinch with this!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT BERGEN?

We would say the best time to visit Bergen is in Norway’s Spring or Autumn, aka the shoulder seasons. Springtime brings slightly warmer weather while the crowds still have not yet picked up, whereas Autumn brings the glorious orange hues and less crowds.

If you are after a Christmassy vibe and don’t mind the colder weather, Bergen from the end of November to end of December is a wonderful place to get into the festive spirit. It hosts the Festival of Lights fireworks end of November and the Christmas Market from 1st December onwards.

IS FLAM A DAY TRIP FROM BERGEN?

Yes, Flåm is a full day trip from Bergen. You can self-guide yourself there using the Flåm railway straight from Bergen train station, or you can simply join our recommended Nærøyfjorden to Flåm fjord cruise and Stegastein viewpoint‘ sightseeing day tour.

This is a more premium and convenient option for those who don’t want the hassle of booking everything themselves.
