It’s peaceful, scenic and set right on a frozen lakeshore with almost zero light pollution.

They offer two igloo types: their original Canvas Igloo (which we stayed in) and a new permanent “Glass Hut” igloo option.

Check availability for LakeLodge Kiehinen & Igloos

An absolute must on your Rovaniemi itinerary is to stay overnight in the igloo at LakeLodge Kiehinen & Igloos for your last night. It is one of the best things to do in Rovaniemi in Winter, as it is an amazing place to see the Northern lights!
We were incredibly lucky to see the Aurora at LakeLodge Kiehinen, even on a cloudy night! Photograph taken by Liam.

Facilities inside: Compact 12 m2 canvas igloo, had everything you needed. Panoramic floor-to-ceiling window ONLY on the lakeside, giving full privacy. Comfy double-bed, amazing heating, composting “dry” toilet inside and a tiny kitchenette with kettle, sink, stove and cutlery, pans etc. USB ports and 230V mains plug sockets.

Facilities on-site: Communal kitchen (kettle, microwave, fridge, tea / coffee facilities) and lounge with comfy seating, fireplace and board games. Free guest parking. Use of private lakeside sauna and jacuzzi charged at €60 for 1.5 hrs.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR STAYING IN A GLASS IGLOO (AND COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID)

If you hadn’t already guessed, we are obsessed with glass igloo hotels, having personally stayed in quite a few now across Finland, Norway and Iceland!!

From our experiences, here’s a few super useful top tips to remember regarding northern lights when staying in a glass igloo (and common mistakes to avoid):

1. If you arrive and it’s cloudy, don’t give up hope! Set an alarm every hour throughout the night

This is our most important glass igloo tip! Even cloudy skies often clear overnight in the very early hours, even if for a little while.

This has happened to us TWICE – once in Iceland at Aurora Igloo and again at LakeLodge Kiehinen in Rovaniemi.

Both times we’ve gone to bed under thick cloud (and rain in Iceland!!). But I stayed optimistic, setting an alarm to go off every hour of the night. And guess what? BOTH times we’ve seen the Aurora when we absolutely weren’t expecting to.

2. Book between late September to late March in Finland

Glass igloos are available year-round, but the Northern Lights are only visible from late September to late March in Finland. Booking outside this window means long daylight hours, aka not ideal for aurora viewing.

3. Booking a glass igloo too far South in Finland

Not all glass igloos in Finland are located above the Arctic Circle. If seeing the Northern Lights is your main goal, focus on Northern Finland location, like Lapland, where aurora sightings are far more reliable.

4. Don’t underestimate light pollution

Even in Northern Finland, light pollution can affect aurora visibility. Remote locations away from towns and roads generally offer the best conditions, which is why ultra-remote stays often deliver the strongest Northern Lights displays.

5. Don’t expect hotel-style services everywhere

Some glass igloos are fully serviced resorts, while others are self-catered, remote or boutique stays with minimal staff on site. Always check what’s included, especially meals, transport and on-site facilities before booking.

FINAL THOUGHTS: WHICH ROVANIEMI IGLOO IS BEST FOR YOU?

Every igloo in Rovaniemi comes with its own vibe, price point and level of luxury – but after comparing them all, here are the standouts depending on what you’re actually looking for:

💎 Best for a once-in-a-lifetime luxury stay
If you want “WOW” factor – book SkyView Igloo Resort or Glass Resort. With two storey suites, private saunas, jacuzzis and high-end interiors – these are the most premium glass-igloo experiences in Rovaniemi.

💰 Best budget-friendly igloo stay
LakeLodge Kiehinen & Igloos, all the way. We’ve personally stayed here and loved it. It’s cosy, affordable, right on a lake, and one of the best dark-sky spots for seeing auroras without the premium price tag.

💑 Best for couples
Depends on what type of couple you are! Either Aito Igloos & Spa Resort for premium spa facilities or Nova Galaxy Village for a truly authentic Finnish experience.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best for families
Apukka Resort. Multiple igloo sizes, family-friendly layouts, loads of bookable activities and easy shuttle access to Santa Claus Village – a parent’s all-rounder!

We hope you have the best time staying in Rovaniemi, get in touch at hello@theflainstravel.com and let us know which one you end up going with! 🤩
